STS Tenacious
Tenacious is a 3 masted barque and the only ship in the world that is designed and specifically built by and for a crew of mixed abilities. Up to 8 wheelchairs can be accommodated on board with 6 lifts between the 3 main decks.
She was built in Woolston, Southampton between 1996 and 2000; the largest wooden ship to be built in the United Kingdom in the last 100 years
Her specification is largely similar to the Jubilee Sailing Trusts previous vessel, Lord Nelson. That said she is somewhat heavier although the 3 extra sails leaves her with a marginal higher top speed.
Now in her 23rd year of service she has sailed all round the world including the Arctic and Antarctic circles. In 2015 she sailed on a 9 month voyage to Australia where she spent 2 1/2 years promoting sailing with mixed ability crews before returning to the UK in 2018.
